How To Reach For The Stars

How to Reach For the Stars Let it first be understood, that in reaching for the stars — or a star, if one chooses to reach in the singular — one must understand that stars, like any shiny object, are deceptive in their appearnce and prone to shimmer much brighter than in reality. The diamond is never as brillant as when it beckons from the fathoms of the glass display case. Nor does the gold coin ever display as beautiful a patina again once it is exchanged for the object of one’s desire. So it is with stars. Ah, yes, they twinkle with a seductive on again off again quality that drives us wild with its randomness. More so the reason for our fascination and eternal pursuit of their charms. We look at them from a distance but we cannot touch them. We cannot experience their warmth. We are light years from their glow. Star light, star bright…first star I see tonight. Wishes span night and space like a string of clear Christmas lights. We tie our hopes and dreams to the tail of a shooting star and are willing to ride it like a bronco until it stops bucking and gives us the satisfaction of a ride well done. Reaching for the stars is like driving using your rear view mirror. Objects may appear larger than they really are. Do not be fooled by their dangling earing quality or by their propensity to jump into the nearest 14 karat setting they see. Stars, I tell you, can be fickle at best. So, then, how to reach for a star? Listen…these are the top five. First, grab a lasso, a butterfly net or a least a piece of fishing line. You won’t reach a star by this method either, but at least you will feel better having done something productive with your time. Second, keep sharp objects away from your face. No one has ever actually been physicially disfigured by a star, but there is always a first one. Third, plan to eat at least once a day until you reach the star of your choice. Less than once, you will risk running out of reaching energy. More than once, you may fall and put a hole in the earth that extends clear to China if you fall. Fourth, consider your plans realistically. What if you do catch it? What are you planning on doing with it? Wear it to houseparties and church functions? Be honest with yourself on this one! And finally, five. Yes, five, on How to Reach for A Star? Believe a quarter of what you hear and a fifth of what you see. Always gaze for stars from the safety of your own back yard but never be afraid to cast your sights on the horizon. Meditate on your tomorrow and reflect on your yesterday. Do all the above daily, never lose faith and when Peter Pan tells you to say “I believe in Faeries”, do so firmly and with conviction. If you are true of heart and pure of spirit, all the stars you need will be in your eyes.
