William Lee: Sit on Your Ass!

Narrative

In 1950s Mexico City, a forty-something American lives a lonely life in a small American community. But the arrival of a young student leads him to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Daniel Craig eventually cast Luca Guadagnino as Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s the boyfriend” after seeing Starkey… Or What Remains of Him After Four Years in the Navy.

Unfortunately, the film fell far short of these hopes

Mission Orpheus (1950). I approached the release of Queer with high expectations, hoping that it would provide a deeply moving and memorable cinematic experience. Daniel Craig’s casting as the queer man was particularly intriguing. It departed from his iconic, soft-spoken portrayal of James Bond and allowed him to showcase his versatility and depth as an actor.

Queer’s greatest flaw is its lack of coherent narrative

Rather than presenting a structured and engaging story, the film feels more like a collection of loosely connected scenes. It centers on an alcoholic gay writer living in Mexico who could have been in deep isolation, an exploration of identity and personal struggle. The execution, however, is flawed, and this promising concept is never fully realized. What’s left is a fragmented and disjointed story that fails to make meaningful emotional or thematic connections.

Ultimately, Queer is a missed opportunity

This inconsistent approach undermines the film’s potential as a character study. Daniel Craig’s performance, while earnest, is limited by a script that gives him little to work with. His performance is overshadowed by the unwieldy narrative, and what could have been a bold and career-defining role goes unfulfilled. It’s disappointing to see an actor of Craig’s caliber unable to shine due to the limitations of the material.

Unfortunately, I can’t give this movie more than three stars

Its fragmented narrative and failure to fundamentally engage with its themes result in a hollow and unfulfilling viewing experience. While the film flirts with the promise of emotional depth, it never quite ends, leaving the audience questioning what they’ve just seen.
